Sean Wellman made an early start to his senior career, playing for North Adelaide in the SANFL in 1991 as a 16-year-old and earning All Australian Teal Cup selection. He was then listed by the Crows as one of eight concession picks before the 1992 season. A back injury kept him out of the game the following year but he made his AFL debut in 1994. At the end of the 1995 season he was released to Essendon as part of the deal to bring Darren Jarman back to South Australia.

Wellman became a fine centre half-back with the Bombers, earning All Australian selection in 1998, playing in their 2000 premiership side and then being named an All Australian for the second time in 2001. He retired at the end of 2004 after 178 games for Essendon.
