Adelaide Football Club - Crows History Locker

In many football codes, traditionally the numbers on the players’ uniforms are related to the position played. Australian Rules Football has never been so constrained.

When the original Crows AFL squad was chosen in 1991, players had come from many teams. Numbers were allocated, where possible, on the basis of what they had worn at their previous clubs. For example, Chris McDermott had worn #10 at Glenelg and received the #10 Crows jumper. But even that became haphazard with seniority often used where several players had worn, or asked to wear, the same number. Also, because of the large size of the squad Shaun Rehn was allocated the now legendary #52
