Drafted from West Adelaide by North Melbourne, Scott Welsh debuted for the Kangaroos as a 17-year-old in 1996.

It was his one and only game for the season and the following year he only had one more opportunity in the league side. After 12 games in 1998 he was one of the emergencies for North’s grand final against Adelaide. He did, however, take the field a year later when North won the flag. For personal reasons, Welsh then asked for a trade back to SA and he switched to the Crows. He had immediate success, booting 47 goals in his first season to be the club’s  leading goalkicker. But the 191cm forward found life tougher in 2001 and was twice dropped back to the SANFL. Welsh started well in 2002 with 26 goals in the first 10 rounds before sidelined by a groin problem and then he had thumb and back injuries in 2003. He showed patches of good form in 2004 but had his best season the next year when he booted 58 goals. A stress fracture ruined his 2006 and then, after kicking 47 goals in 2007, he could not agree to contract terms with the Crows and was traded to the Western Bulldogs.
