A member of the first ever Crows team, Rodney ‘Rocket’ Maynard was an unfashionable but effective defender who did not miss a game in Adelaide’s first two seasons. His dedication even saw him play in Adelaide’s first trial game on the eve of his wedding!

Originally a country boy from Lameroo, Maynard was recruited by Norwood and he played 137 games for the Redlegs, while he topped their goalkicking in 1988. He was utilised in defence by the Crows and in 1991 was honoured as the Club’s first winner of the Best Team Man award. Injuries cut his AFL career short, although he was able to forge a long country footy career that was capped off by a premiership with Lameroo in 2008. His consistency and “team first” approach not only made him a recipient of the Club’s Best Team Man Award but also earned him a selection in the AFC Team of the Decade 1991-2000.
