Matthew Wright’s career faced an early obstacle when his skull was fractured when hit on the head by a bottle at a party in 2007. It was his under-18 year. Two years later the North Adelaide’s small midfielder earned a rookie opportunity with the Crows and in his first season played 19 games.

From 2011-2015 he was a regular starter, nearly reaching the 100-game milestone. He was delisted, however, and joined Carlton where in three seasons he played  65 games. Looking to return home, Wright joined Adelaide’s SANFL squad in 2019 as captain, offering experience and leadership to the younger Crows. He continued in this role until the end of the 2023 season, when he retired after playing his 300th game of senior football.
