Martin Mattner earned his AFL opportunity in 2002, the same year he played a starring role in Sturt’s premiership win. After a couple of seasons as a fringe player he developed into a valuable wingman, and later half-back, for Adelaide. Known for his fierce tackling and dashing run from defence, Mattner was traded to Sydney two games shy of his 100th appearance for Adelaide.

That did not stall his career, however as he played 124 games and won a premiership with Sydney. Mattner retired in 2013, and coached Sturt to back-to-back premierships in the SANFL  in 2016 and 2017 before having a stint as assistant coach with the Crows 2018-2020.
