Kane Johnson broke new ground as one of the first high-profile Victorian juniors drafted by the Crows. A Victorian under-17 captain and All Australian, Johnson was drafted in 1995 and debuted one season later. He became an AFL regular in 1997 and played in both of Adelaide’s first two premierships, performing strongly in both grand finals across half-back and in the midfield.

Over the next few seasons Johnson had a constant battle with soft tissue injuries as well as a broken jaw but was still an important and consistent contributor. After 104 games in seven seasons Johnson asked to be traded to Richmond. He finished runner-up in the Tigers’ best and fairest in both 2003 and 2004, was appointed captain in 2005 and in 2006 won their best and fairest. He stepped aside as captain at the end of 2008 and retired in 2009 with 220 AFL games to his name.

Johnson is a member of the AFC Team of the Decade 1991-2000.
