A gun junior Victorian footballer, Jason McCartney had a 13-year career spanning stints at Collingwood, Adelaide and North Melbourne. He joined Adelaide from the Magpies ahead of the 1995 season. Unfortunately, In 1997, Jason missed out on selection to play in the Grand Final side for Adelaide when they won their first Premiership.  Jason moved on to play at North Melbourne in 1998. He did play for North Melbourne in the 1998 Grand Final against The Crows.  Again, unfortunately for Jason, Adelaide won its second premiership against North Melbourne that year.

In 1999 he missed the Kangaroos’ premiership due to suspension. Off the field, he suffered severe burns during the 2002 Bali Bombings and was lucky to survive. He fought his way back into North’s best-22 in 2003, however he announced his retirement after the final siren of his comeback game. Post playing days McCartney moved into football administration in several roles and with several clubs.
