James played as a small midfielder. He was rewarded for good SANFL form with a promotion from the AFC rookie list in 2001. However, after 38 games in four seasons he was delisted. James then returned to Norwood in the SANFL where he was named Norwood’s captain in 2007 and was also their club champion that year. He finished his 228-game SANFL career in style with a premiership in 2012.
