James Byrne, a former Sydney rookie, was claimed from SANFL club Glenelg by Adelaide in the 2000 pre-season draft. The athletic midfielder produced some solid performances in his first season when he played 13 AFL games but he had a series of niggling injuries and was delisted after his second season.
His state league career was an impressive one after that, with best and fairest wins at Glenelg and WAFL club South Fremantle, before he won the VFL’s JJ Liston Trophy and captained Geelong to the VFL premiership in 2007. Subsequently he joined Essendon’s coaching staff.
