Hately played SANFL league football in his draft year and was named in the All-Australian side for his performances for South Australia in the Under-18 National Championships in 2018. A first-round selection (No.14, 2018) for the GWS Giants from SANFL side Central District, he spent two years at the GWS Giants for 13 AFL games before joining the Crows in the 2020 pre-season draft. A tall and strong-bodied midfielder, Hately was restricted by a groin injury in his first year with the Crows and played only three AFL games. He made 11 appearances in 2022 and only one (as the sub) in 2023. He performed strongly in the SANFL with the Crows but was not offered a new contract.
