Ian Callinan slipped through the AFL’s net until Adelaide rookie-listed him aged 27, for the 2011 season. His career had seen him win the 2005 J.J. Liston Trophy for the Tasmanian Devils in the VFL, before he joined Central District and one two best and fairest awards in SA. He also played in four consecutive premierships with the Bulldogs.
In Round 14, 2011, he finally made his AFL debut, collecting 21 touches and one goal. The next season he booted 39 goals as a senior-listed player. Callinan accepted a development coaching role with the Club as well and was the inaugural SANFL Crows captain. With his brief time in the AFL over, he won two Club best and fairest awards as captain in the SANFL, before returning to Tasmania.
