Originally drafted from South Adelaide, Clay Sampson showed potential in his 13 games with Melbourne in 1995-96. The wingman then switched to the Crows, broke into the team late in the season, and was a member of the 1997 premiership side. After missing out on a second premiership in 1998 he was traded to Richmond, where he played another 27 games in two seasons. He then returned to South Adelaide, where he captained and later coached the Panthers.
