Much to the delight of Crows fans, the South Australian local returned to his home state in 2017, after playing 231 games for Carlton. In his junior years, Gibbs captained SA’s Under-16 team and played in the National Under-18 Championships, earning All Australian honours.
After his father Ross played 253 SANFL matches for Glenelg, Gibbs followed in his footsteps, winning the Under 17 Best and Fairest in 2004. Gibbs was selected with pick No. 1 in the 2006 National Draft and won Carlton’s best and fairest in 2014.
In 2017, Gibbs was traded to Adelaide where he played every game in his first season. In his second season at Adelaide, Gibbs averaged 19.8 disposals across 12 games. He played just 3 games in 2020 and announced his retirement before playing a final game against his old club Carlton, where he showed something of his old form with 27 disposals. He was chaired off after the game by two of his old Carlton team-mates, being acknowledged by both teams.
