Bruce Abernethy started his SANFL career with Port Adelaide in 1979 and played in three premierships in his first three seasons. The classy wingman moved to the VFL in 1982, played 43 games for North Melbourne in two seasons before joining Collingwood, where he played 58 games in three years.
Abernethy then chose to return to Port Adelaide before the 1987 season. He won the club’s best and fairest in his first season back at the SANFL Magpies before they had a run of three consecutive premierships from 1988-1990. He joined Adelaide but only made 11 appearances over two seasons.
His career finished in 1992 with another SANFL premiership at the Magpies. Post football, Abernethy became a sports presenter with Channel 7. He was inducted into the SA Football Hall of Fame in 2007.
