After playing in an SANFL premiership the following week with Central District, he was traded to the Crows. Noted for his courage, Symes won the Best Team Man award in 2009. He was voted into the leadership group for 2010 but missed the first half of the season with a knee injury.

Copping more injuries in 2011, including a broken jaw, Symes played only two AFL games in 2012 but had a strong year in the SANFL and was a joint winner of the Magarey Medal. He was delisted by Adelaide, retiring from the SANFL in 2014 following a serious head injury.
