A Glenelg junior who also excelled at cricket, Matthew Bode spent three years with Port Adelaide for 29 games before seeking a trade to the Crows. He broke his hand in his first outing early in 2001 and did not play another game that season. Bode proved valuable in 2002, playing every game and booting 22 goals.

Injuries restricted his progress with the Crows but after major shoulder surgery he bounced back with 32 goals in a full 2006 season. Unfortunately a knee injury in 2007 led to the end of his AFL career, with his final playing season spent at Glenelg in the SANFL. Following this, he  had stints as a fitness coach and at both the Adelaide Crows and Carlton.
