The son of former Sturt champion Sandy Nelson, Ben Nelson left Sturt at the end of 1996 and played 40 AFL games for Carlton. The strong midfielder, who played in their losing 1999 grand final side, was traded to Adelaide before the 2002 season and played 12 games. He won a premiership with Sturt in 2002 and ultimately retired in 2010 after 205 appearances.
