Peter Vardy was recruited in the 1995 pre-season draft before he had played league football at Central District. Injuries held him back in his first year; he made his AFL debut in 1996. Vardy had an outstanding 1997 season as a wingman and half-forward, playing 24 games and kicking 28 goals, but missed the preliminary final and grand final because of a broken collarbone.

He booted 44 goals in 1998, including seven against Port, six in a semi-final win over Sydney and two goals in the 1998 grand final win over North Melbourne. After suffering more groin injuries, Vardy was traded to Melbourne at the end of 2001 after 96 games and he added 42 more at the Demons.
