Drafted in 1996 the promising young defender, Matthew Collins failed to reach his potential suffering several serious injuries, including a broken leg, late in 1997. Seeking to return home to Victoria, Collins was traded to Melbourne as part of a deal involving Nathan Bassett at the end of 1997. He played 29 games for the Demons before retiring from the AFL.
